VA Grants Can Fund Your Accessible Bathroom
If you’re a veteran with a service-connected disability — and in some cases even without one — the VA offers grant programs that fund exactly the kind of bathroom modifications we build. These are grants, not loans: no repayment. Many Hampton Roads veterans don’t know these programs exist, or assume the paperwork makes them unreachable. They exist, and we’re glad to point you in the right direction.
HISA Grant
Home Improvements & Structural Alterations — for medically necessary modifications like accessible showers and bathroom entrances. Up to $6,800 for service-connected conditions, up to $2,000 for non-service-connected. Requires a prescription from a VA physician.
SHA Grant
Special Home Adaptation — for veterans with specific qualifying service-connected disabilities. Covers adaptations like roll-in showers and widened doorways. FY 2026 maximum; usable across multiple projects over a lifetime.
SAH Grant
Specially Adapted Housing — the largest program, for veterans with severe qualifying service-connected disabilities. Funds major home modifications, including fully adapted bathrooms. FY 2026 maximum.

How much does an accessible bathroom remodel cost?
Tub-to-walk-in-shower conversions and targeted accessibility updates often run below a full remodel; complete barrier-free rebuilds fall in the typical $12,000–$30,000 full-remodel range, depending on scope. Every project gets a free, detailed estimate — and for VA grant projects, a written scope formatted for the application.
Will the VA pay for my bathroom modification?
If you have a qualifying service-connected disability, very possibly — the HISA, SHA, and SAH programs all cover bathroom accessibility work, with FY 2026 maximums of $6,800, $25,350, and $126,526 respectively. HISA is also available at a lower amount ($2,000) for some non-service-connected conditions. Eligibility is determined by the VA: HISA starts with a prescription from your VA physician, and SAH/SHA applications go through va.gov. We’ll support your application with the documentation contractors are asked to provide.
Do grab bars require tearing open the wall?
Properly installed ones anchored into blocking do require wall access — which is exactly why the best time to add them is during a remodel, when the walls are already open. Done then, the blocking costs almost nothing and the bars hold real weight for decades. Surface-mounted alternatives exist, but we’ll be honest about their limits.
Can a curbless shower work in my existing bathroom?
Usually, yes — it takes proper planning of the floor structure and drainage so the zero-threshold entry doesn’t become a leak. That engineering is the difference between a true barrier-free shower and a future water-damage problem, and it’s why this work shouldn’t go to the lowest bidder.
Will an accessible bathroom hurt my home’s resale value?
Done well, the opposite. Curbless showers, comfort-height fixtures, and wider clearances are current design trends in their own right — buyers see a high-end modern bathroom, and aging-in-place readiness is increasingly a selling point, not a stigma.
How fast can you complete an accessibility project?
Targeted projects — a tub-to-shower conversion with grab bars and a bench — often finish faster than full remodels, typically within two to three weeks of active work once materials arrive. When safety is the driver, we prioritize scheduling accordingly.
